Bernhardt Maurice Alm (Swede) 1942
|
My Dad, Bernhardt Maurice Alm, served in the US Army-Air Force during WWII in the 307th Bomb Group, 424th and 371st Bomb Squadron. He was known as Swede to his friends or Maurice (pronounced like Morris). He was stationed at Ephrata, Wa. and Sioux City, Ia. for training and wanted to be a pilot but his eyes were too bad. So instead, he became an airplane mechanic. After training, he was sent through Hickham AFB, Hawaii, and on to the Pacific. In the Pacific, he was at Wake Island, Guadalcanal, and New Guinea, to name a few of the places. He worked on the planes and loaded bombs. In downtime, he loved to swim and play bridge. While in New Guinea, he contracted an illness that ruined his heart and ultimately took his life at an early age in 1956.
These letters are ones that my Dad wrote to family and friends back home when he was serving in WWII, Pacific Theater. Some are long, others short. All offer a little insight as to how it must have been to really "be there."
