6 August 2002 - Update from Daniel:
Daniel has just informed me that their JUG has topped the 5000 mark!!
Congratulations Daniel and DFJUG!!!
We have crossed the 5,000 barrier !!! DFJUG is now 5,402 Java developers ...
It´s absolutely craizy ...
Note: Arrangement and formatting are my own. Text is unchanged.
Hello Marie, Bom dia (Good Morning)
As I promised, here is the text you can use (if you will) about our JUG.
But, first of all I would like to thank your support during the JavaOne :-)
It was a really BIG surprise to know that Brasilia Java Users Group - DFJUG,
with its 4850 members, is the biggest JUG in the world !
Let me update you with you our progress and recent developments. I don't
remember if I already mentioned that our group was formed on the 10th of
February 1998. Over the years we have had no less than three main events and
twelve monthly seminars. The attendance at each monthly seminar has not been
less than 100 people and hundreds of people have come to the annual events.
We have photos and detailed information of all our activities. I will note
the sites addresses where you can get proof of these activities, and also
the links to our partners and support.

Partners
We have six partners and supporters, Borland Latin America, X25, AWA,
BlueStar (a Borland vendor), AIP and Editora Campus, see at :
www.dfjug.org . In November last year our group had about 1,200
members, now we have more aprox. 5,000 members to date. Our motto is "United
We Flourish"-"Divided We Perish". Our group consists of Java developers and
programmers, system analysts, university professors, directors of various
enterprises, psychologists, doctors. As a matter-of fact we have people from
all areas and professions.
Project Girrasol
DFJUG is involved in a social program that is aiming at developing the slums
and releasing underprivileged children from their poverty. We represent a
very important resource for people living in slums, teaching them how to use
computers and avoid digital exclusion in our societies. Weekly bulletins are
being sent to hundreds of people, lecturers are being conducted at
universities; monthly planned events convened in cooperation with large
computer companies and high level and low cost technological courses in
partnership with computer training schools are also include in our
activities. Our first social program is called "Project Girrasol" [Sun
Flower]. I will give you some details about this, later on.
Project Girrasol [Sun Flower] was started, two years ago, in a slum town
called Santa Maria Sul - DF. We were fortunate to get a room in a half
finished church [through the help of a father] in Santa Maria. We have done
some reforming to the room, to put it in order. Some computer scraps were
donated to us by Java volunteers. Several technician volunteers repaired and
put them together. We then started giving courses to teaching the children
how to use the computers
www.ccbnet.org.br/Companhia/comp003mat004.htm . After that we started
giving advance classes for a small (symbolical) fee. The money accumulated
was just to pay the material used. We have produced good professionals in a
year-period. A certain young man whom we found in that town is now a very
good Java developer and he is presently working for one of our partners,
AWA, see at www.dfjug.org/portugues/GIRASSOL.htm and
www.ccbnet.org.br/ccbnet.htm (click on the left side of the window at
"Projeto Girassol", and then select "400 Sopas por Dia")
After successfully enduring with "Project Girrasol" for two years, I have
introduced a new idea - the "Gifted Children" program. Public Welfare
Officers took a number of the homeless children off the streets and put them
on a farm about 60 kilometers from Brasília, in the state of Goías. This
farm has been a real home for the abandoned and homeless for about 30 years.
The farm is called "Lar Betel"[The House of God]. On the farm there is a
church, a school, a restaurant, a maintenance department, health clinic etc.
There is a total of 153 children who live in small family units, and a staff
of 20 people (70% were brought up at Betel!). In our work group we have
psychologists who are also Java developers and we have done some
psychological research on a pre-selected group of the Betel school children
and we discovered that there are 12 gifted children among the lot,
[potential geniuses]. A global scientific research had discovered that 3% of
the world population are geniuses and we strongly believe that a number of
them are among these kids. The teachers and staff are being paid through
donations from various churches and charity organizations from around the
world. They survive on a meager salary, but it is amazing how they hang-in
and do their best, without complaining.
Well, from time to time people enter or leave the groups we are trying to
help. Increasing and decreasing of members is somehow inevitable. We claim
no demands over the future of the people we help. Our main objective is to
open a way for them so they can develop themselves and enhance their
communities, which could eventually lead to making a better nation. They are
the rulers of their destinies! We are trying to bring out the best in
people; make them realize that they were created for a purpose and not to
let them die in ignorance and frustration. Eliminating poverty could and
should diminish the crime in our communities.
However, perseverance is the key to success. A remarkable example is a
25-year old young lady, who has been living at the farm since the age of
five. She was taken there with her brother and sister due to a family
dispute. Over the years she has dedicated herself to studying and she is now
Betel's school principal. She is also preparing for her master's degree.
Every summer, a group of young British volunteers "Crusoe Project" come to
Betel and render a variety of voluntary services, run clubs, give after
school classes; paint and do general maintenance. We sincerely express our
gratitude to every individual who opens his heart and reaches out his hands
to help us.

Maratona
Our last main annual event which took place on the 8th of December 2001, was
the most vibrant and hectic phenomena of all. It was called Maratona
[marathon] 4 Java. (www.x25.com.br/maratona.htm ) There were over a
thousand people present at that forum. The event was divided into 4 threads.
[see below]
Now, I must clearly state that we do not receive any financial support
whatsoever. No governmental financial support nor from our partners. Our
partners contribute by providing venues for us to hold our events and
laboratories to give our courses. They also send speakers and instructors to
give lectures on our occasions, and support us in many other ways, except
for financial support.
We are also planning another "Maratona 4 Java"[marathon] to be held on the
5th of October this year and we'll be inviting people from our Java
community. We are also reconstructing our English web site, so as to send
bulletins to Java members in English speaking countries, in order to keep
them updated with our program.

Remarks
We, the original founders of DFJUG, are a group of middle class people, who
are at the peak of our careers. We have come through a long line of
challenges and struggles, and this is what inspired and invoked the courage
in us to do what we are doing. We see it as our bounded duty to stretch out
a helping hand to the "less fortunate" people, especially the children, many
of them are avid to learn and improve there living standards. This may sound
crazy; a group of over 5.000 people, surviving and executing all these
functions, without financial support; however, this is nothing but the
sincere truth.
Well, these are the projects, functions, plans and dreams of the "DFJUG"
Brasilia Java Users Group in Brasília / Brazil. A large number of Java
developers [5,000] surviving, functioning and succeeding without financial
support.
This is all for now, I hope to hear from you soon.
Goodbye and thank you in advance for your attentive reading.
I remain yours sincerely
